The Guitar Virtuoso
EDIN KARAMAZOV, guitar
G. Zamboni, F. Sor, A. Barrios, L. Brouwer, A. Piazzolla
“When Karamazov plays, magic floats in the air”. He gives music a unique expressivity that is subsequently transformed into generation of art, which doesn’t reconstruct extant works, but creates new ones. That can’t be done by everyone.” That was written about Karamazov in 2011 by Leo Brouwer, a Cuban composer and one of the most important and prolific guitar composers today. As an advocate of the new, rare and unorthodox, Edin Karamazov follows a unique artistic vision, combining the spirit of a daring research with the task of extending the final limits of technique and repertoire for the guitar and lute. He won the prestigious Edison Award (2002), Premio Cubadisco for the best foreign musician-instrumentalist in Cuba (2009); he was nominated for Grammy Award (2001), Brit Award (2007), Premio Goffredo Petrassi for the best instrumentalist in Italy (2011), Diapason d’Or, and other awards. Krzystof Penderecki, Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tuur, Peter Sculthorpe, as well as the composers who devoted to lute or guitar a greater part of their oeuvre, such as Leo Brouwer, Dušan Bogdanović and Nikita Koshkin, have written important works dedicated to Edin Karamazov. Edin returns to Zadar after having enchanted the audience together with Andreas Scholl in February 2016, on the occasion of the opening of the Rector’s Palace. However, this time the Zadar audience will have the opportunity to enjoy his soloist performance on more guitars and lutes, and experience the diversity of sounds and colours in interpretations that reach the pinnacle only in the hands of true guitarist virtuosos.
