    10th INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION ZADAR

International Choir Competition Zadar as a manifestation grew out of a long tradition of choral singing in the City. Guardians of this tradition are primarily the Croatian Music and Choral SocietyZoranić, founded in 1908 and the Festival of Choirs which took place in Zadar since 1970 until the beginning of the Croatian War of Independence.

These were the grounds on which the International Choir Competition was established in 1997, a manifestation of concert and competitive character which even nowadays carries the role of a follower, holder and instigator of the amateur choral singing tradition on a local, national and international level.

Competitors are amateur choirs from different parts of the world. With their performances at the competitive part but also at non-formal occasions on town squares, enrich and vivify the cultural life of Zadar.

This year 20 choirs from Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Croatia have passed the Programme Committee selection and have been invited to Zadar to participate in the Competition.

We are looking forward to a great competition for the Golden, Silver and Bronze Abbess Čika’s Cross in three categories: men’s, women’s and mixed choirs.

Programme of the Competition is on this link.

CONCERT SEASON ZADAR

CONCERT SEASON ZADAR

…for music enriches!

Zadar Concert Season comprises a number of concerts produced by the Zadar Concert Office from October to June. The first group of events consists of classical music programmes under the slogan “… for music enriches!” and these include the Subscription Cycle, the Zadar Chamber Orchestra Cycle and the Bersa Cycle. The second group of events consists of programmes of various musical genres, under the slogan “… for music moves!” These include Young Artists in the Rector’s Palace Cycle, Club in the Rector’s Palace Cycle and Dance in the Rector’s Palace Cycle.

Subscription Cycle presents guest concerts by musicians, ensembles, orchestras and soloists of exceptional quality from Croatia, Europe and the world. Besides renowned Croatian soloists such as Ivo Pogorelić, Lovro Pogorelić, Martina Filjak, Danijel Detoni, Edin Karamazov, Petrit Çeku, Aljoša Jurinić, Katarina Livljanić, Ivana Lazar, Kristina Kolar, Ljiljana Šišeta Vrbančić, Oliver Vrbančić, Vladimir Krpan or Pavao Mašić, the Subscription Cycle also hosted outstanding international musicians such as Erez Ofer, Elisaveta Blumina, Miroslav Tadić, Boštjan Lipovšek, Francesca Dego, Simone Gramaglia, Aleksandar Nikolić, and many others. Among the visiting ensembles there are also some regular guests such as the Croatian Radio-Television Symphony Orchestra, the Croatian Radio-Television Jazz Orchestra, the Choir of the Croatian Radio-Television, the Zagreb Philharmonic and Ensemble Antiphonus. In addition, there were also the Beltango Quinteto, the Zagreb Guitarist Quartet, and the percussion ensembles STOP, SUDAR, KLANG, etc.

The concerts of the Zadar Chamber Orchestra Cycle are created under the artistic leadership of the Zadar-born maestro Ivan Repušić, the most successful Croatian conductor of the younger generation with a permanent address in Germany (Hannover, Munich). The Orchestra gives four to five concerts each Concert Season, thus hosting renowned soloists (Stefan Milenković, Marco Graziani, Ivan Krpan, Marijan Đuzel, Stjepan Hauser, Vedran Kocelj, Boštjan and Milena Lipovšek, Žarko Perišić, Katja Repušić, Evgenia Epshtein, etc.) and conductors (Pavle Dešpalj, the honorary conductor-in-chief and founder of the Orchestra, Berislav Šipuš, Tomislav Fačini, Veton Marevci, Ivan Hut, and others)from Croatia and abroad. The Orchestra performs repertory and rarely performed pieces from a broad music literature, but they also honour Croatian musical creativity, they commission and premiere works of Croatian composers and enable the ever-growing number of Zadar-based strings to regularly perform in the town they reside.

The Bersa Cycle showcases students and teachers of the Blagoje Bersa Music School in Zadar. Their five concerts during the Concert Season represent a platform for their presenting to the wider audience, the creation of new experiences, and the emergence of new musical projects and collaborations. At the incentive of the Zadar Concert Office, the cycle introduced the Bersiad, an annual musical-dramatic festivity dedicated to Blagoje Bersa. The aim of the Bersiad is the promotion of life and oeuvre of Blagoje Bersa on all levels – from music school students and professional musicians to the audience. Until today, the Bersiad hosted the Zadar Chamber Orchestra, Pavle Dešpalj, Zagreb Guitarist Quartet, Marco Graziani, Lucija Brnadić, Srđan Čaldarović, Martina Gojčeta Silić, Nela Šarić, Marta Musap, Blanka Aždajić Medić, Lidija Marin, Mirjam Škreblin, and others.

“… for music moves!”

The cycles Young Artists in the Rector’s Palace, Club in the Rector’s Palace and Dance in the Rector’s Palace were created in 2017 when the Zadar Concert Office moved in the Rector’s Palace, where it manages three halls – the Bersa Brothers Concert Hall, the Multimedia Hall and the Creative Hall.

Club in the Rector’s Palacerefers to jazz, blues, ethno and world music concerts, when the Concert Hall is transformed into club space in which audience has the opportunity to listen to exceptional Croatian and foreign musicians while enjoying a drink at a table. The following performers have appeared in the Club in the Rector’s Palace: Chui Electro Jazz Band, Conjunto Sandunga, Oogroovay Jazz Quintet, Enrico Zanisi, Miron Hauser, Branko Sterpin, Luka Žužić, Hrvoje Rupčić, Lela Kaplowitz, Joe Kaplowitz, Black Coffee, etc.

Music workshops for youth and concerts of young musicians make the basis of the concept named Young Artists in the Rector’s Palace. Concerts of young musicians from Zadar and other parts of Croatia form a platform which serves as support for musicians who are yet to establish themselves at the scene. Music workshops encompass work with young peoplewithout a significant musical education, with the aim to bring music closer to them, both as an art and as a skill, in order to offer them an experience that would be an impulse for their future work.

Dance in the Rector’s Palace offers classical dance evenings accompanied by live or recorded music. Dance floor of the Rector’s Palace becomes occupied by the Argentine tango and salsa dancers. The dance couples have the opportunity to dance, have a drink, socialize and talk about their dancing experiences while listening to a selection of music pieces.

Musical Evening In St Donat

Musical Evening In St Donat

Musical evenings in St Donat are the oldest international music festival in Zadar. The festival was created in 1961 when local conductor Pavle Dešpalj, with a group of friends and musicians, decided to adapt the church of St. Donat for concerts. Over the course of half a century, their youthful enthusiasm turned into one of the most important festivals in Croatia, uniquely combining music and architecture. The rotunda of the Holy Trinity or St Donat is an acoustic phenomenon which makes any kind of musical ensemble sound amazing. The beauty of its interior and acoustic idiosyncrasy never fail to impress the numerous musicians and ensembles who perform there during the festival (Dunja Vejzović, Catherine Livljanić, Valter, May Dešpalj-Begovic, Igor Kuljerić, Ivan Repušić, Stefan Milenkovic, Monika Leskovar, Giovanni Sollima, Renata Pokupić, Aniello Desiderio, Valentina Fijačko, Dangain, Alexander Kalajdžić, Dimitrij Sinkovski, Sascha Goetzel, Lorin Maazel, Croatian Radiotelevision Choir, ensembles Pro Cantione Antiqua, Dialogos, Hilliard, Perceval, Zadar Chamber Orchestra, Zagreb Soloists, Varaždin Chamber Orchestra, German Chamber Orchestra, Hungarian Virtuosi, Orquestrina Baborák and many others). Musical evenings in St Donat host performances of various genres of music by world's top musicians and serve as a meeting place of Zadar's most prominent musicians, painting an image of this musical event as one of the greatest music focal points in our area.
